The Santo António Church was part of the convent of the same name, founded in 1527 by the monk António de Buarcos with the backing of King João III. The original convent buildings have all undergone extensive alteration and, apart from the church, are no longer used for religious purposes. Extensive remodelling of the church took place in 1725 and today it has an elegant exterior and the interior has some interesting sculptures and paintings. The adjoining early 19th chapel belongs to the Third Order of St Francis.
