Above the harbour is the fishermen’s chapel of Santo António, which has a tiled panel recording that, as the Republic was declared in Lisbon on 5th October 1910, it was from Ericeira that Portugal’s last king, Manuel II, set sail to go into exile. He died in 1932 in Twickenham, Southwest London. The chapel is also known as the chapel of Our Lady of the Blessed Journey. It dates from 1609, but a stone above the main portal confirms that it was renovated in 1844. It is a centre of attraction during the annual August festivities organised by the fishermen.
