Located close to the Moinho do Papel on the left bank of the River Lis, the Convento de Santo Agostinho comprises the church, monastery, cloister, and the old seminary building. Authorised by King Sebastian, and founded in 1579 by Bishop Frei Gaspar do Casal, the construction was completed in the 17th century with subsequent alterations in the 18th century. The bishop’s coat of arms is over the portal. After the suppression of religious orders in 1834, the monastery became a barracks until 1944 when the church was returned to the diocese. The altar is the work of architect Ernesto Korrodi (1870-1944).
