The Santiago Tower was one of the city’s entrances as well as a lookout point and still manages to retain a medieval appearance, in spite of subsequent rococo style additions. These 18th century additions are on the north façade where the upper section is dominated by the clock and bell tower, whilst below is the oratory to Our Lady of the Tower. This was the work of André Soares and erected as an act of thanksgiving, for protection from the great earthquake of 1755. The tower is linked to the buildings of the Santiago seminary.
