The Santiago Seminary, including the church of St Paul, was originally the College of the Order of the Company of Jesus, built in the 16th century by Archbishop Bartholomew of Braga. An important figure, he attended the Council of Trent in 1545. When the order was disbanded in 1785, Archbishop Gaspar of Bragança donated the college to the Ursuline Sisters of Viana do Castelo and then in 1878 it became a seminary specialising in the teaching of philosophy. As normal with Jesuit church buildings, the exterior is sparse and sombre; however the Baroque interior is richly decorated with particularly fine altars.
