Built on the orders of Diogo de Sousa (1461-1532), the Archbishop of Braga, the Santiago Fountain is on the south side of the square which also contains the Pio XII and Medina museums. The rectangular design is unusual and it is actually a covered washhouse with a fountain outside, built for common usage. There an inscription confirming the date of 1531 and detailing the donor; Diogo’s coat of arms is also displayed. A niche contains a statue of Santiago.
