The 17th century Forte de Santiago, which formed part of the Sado estuarys line of defence, is on the beach. Completed in 1648, it was the work of Joćo Cosmander, a Jesuit priest and colonel of the King Joćo IV guard. The regional military government took up residence in 1712 on the north side and in the 18th century the same area also served as a summer residence for the Meninos de Palhavć, bastard sons of King Joćo V. The Fort was also used at times as a prison and then in 1886 was handed over to the Customs authorities.
