Santiago do Cacém is a fortified village lying to the south of Setúbal. Next to its majestic castle of Arab origin is the São Pedro Chapel, which dates from the early Middle Ages. Near Santiago do Cacém is the outstanding archaeological site of Miróbriga, which was an important urban centre in Roman times. Santiago do Cacém is worth visiting purely for its quaint streets, excellent museums and the views of the wonderful Alentejo countryside due to its picturesque hilltop position.
