The Castelo de Santiago da Barra, also known as the Castelo de São Tiago da Barra, stands at the mouth of the River Lima and was built in the 16th century to defend the harbour against pirates. It is alleged that this accounts for the ‘do Castelo’ portion of the town’s name. The two towers were added in the 18th century. These days it is used as a conference and exhibition centre and houses the Alto Minho Regional Tourist Board, which is worth visiting. A market is held outside the walls each Friday.
