The restored façade of the 12th century church of Santiago overlooks the busy square of Praça do Comércio. Whilst this church was consecrated in 1206, it is said that Fernando I, the King of León, founded a church here in the 11th century after defeating the Moors and recapturing Coimbra. The façade is considered one of Portugal’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture. In contrast to the somewhat plain façade, the interior, redesigned in the 16th century when a Gothic side chapel was added and again in the 18th century, has a Rococo gilded altarpiece.
