The 15th century Santiago monastery church is located inside the castle; it is a characteristically austere late Gothic period building with minimal external decoration. The church contains the tomb of Jorge de Lencastre (1481-1550), who was the last grand master of the Order of Santiago and the illegitimate son of King João II and his mistress Ana de Mendonça. The church has beautiful 17th and 18th century azulejo decoration and the altar has a reproduction of a 14th century Gothic altar piece from Santiago do Cacém, representing St James fighting the Moors.
