Near the Belmonte Castle gate is the simple Romanesque/Gothic Santiago Church, the parish church until 1940 which was restored in 1971. Annexed to the church is the Capela dos Cabrais, which is the Cabral family pantheon and was built on the orders of the discoverer of Brazil, Pedro Álvares Cabral, who was born here in the castle in 1467. There is a beautiful 13th century statue of the Madonna with the body of Christ and some interesting frescoes above the altar.
