The blessing of cattle, a very old tradition of pagan origin, takes place each May at the huge Santa Quitéria Church at Meca, about 5 km northwest of Alenquer. The church was built in the mid-18th century under the patronage of Queen Maria I, by the Santa Quitéria de Meca fraternity. It bears a resemblance to the Estrela Basilica in Lisbon and is considered a good example of neo-classical architecture. Inside there are paintings attributed to Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho and António Narciso and an interesting 1816 organ.
