In a project completed in July 2007 under Aires Mateus Architects, the Santa Marta lighthouse, which was inaugurated 1868, has been converted into an avant-garde museum. The original lighthouse, which was built inside a 17th century fort, was increased in height in 1936 from 12 to 20 metres because of the obstruction of neighbouring buildings. The museum now gives an insight into the life of a lighthouse keeper and covers navigational aids and the history of the Santa Marta and other Portuguese lighthouses. There is a documentation centre and cafeteria
