The 13th century Gothic Church of Santa Maria do Olival contains the grave of Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master of the Knights Templar. Other Grand Masters are also buried here. There was an earlier church, circa 1160, which was built as the Pantheon for the Order, but only the porch and entrance now remains .The façade has a distinctive three storey bell tower and rose window, inside there is a graceful Renaissance pulpit. It was once the mother church for mariners during the Age of Discovery.
