Within the castle walls of Alcácer do Sal are the ruins of the Convent and Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, built in the Romanesque-Gothic style of the 13th century. It is believed that the church was built on the site of a former mosque. A stone sculpture over the façade features the symbols of the Order of Santiago, these being the crossed-sword, scallop shells and the hat and garb of a pilgrim who has visited Santiago. One of the lateral chapels is of particular note. It has magnificent tiles (azuelos) from the early part of the 17th century.
