Built in the 13th century within the castle walls, Santa Maria do Castelo was, until the 14th century, the town’s first mother church. Because of its situation it was, in times of war, extremely vulnerable and was damaged in 1640. Further damaged by a fire in 1704, it was finally destroyed during the French invasion in the 19th century and subsequently completely rebuilt. The church houses the tomb of locally born 16th century poet João Rois. From the church a flight of steps leads up to the Miradouro de São Gens, offering splendid views of the town and surrounding area.
