Located approximately 25 km northeast of Braga, the 12th century Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria do Bouro was rebuilt in late 16th/early 17th centuries, but fell into disuse with the suppression of religious orders in 1834. The church is approached by an impressive staircase with important Cistercian order statues. It has a richly decorated interior, with carved and gilded woodwork and 18th-century azulejo tile panels, depicting episodes from the life of St. Bernard. A façade, the chapter house, kitchen, refectory and the beautiful cloister are part of a Pousada, an outstanding restoration project by the distinguished architect Eduardo Souto Moura.
