The well preserved Santa Maria de Aguiar Monastery lies about 3 km southeast of the town of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. Built in 1174, on the orders of King Afonso Henriques, its buildings are typical of the simple Cistercian Order style. In addition to the church, areas also preserved include the residential wing, sacristy and chapter house. The magnificent 1636 Baroque high altar contrasts with the otherwise sombre architecture and incorporates statues of São Bento and São Bernardo. The monastery served as a shelter for pilgrims on their way to Santiago and was declared a National Monument in 1932.
