The pleasant Santa Maria da Alcaçova Church in Gothic style is located within the castle walls (see separate entry) and was founded in 1059. The 16th century restoration is attributed to Francisco Pires and its three naves and arches illustrate the Manueline style. Notable features are Master Pero’s 14th century Gothic limestone sculptures of Virgem do Ó and Anjo da Anunciação, Hispanic-Arabian glazed tiling, which dates from c.1500. It was declared a National Monument in 1910.
