Situated within the castle walls is the church of St Mary of the Assumption, more commonly known as Nossa Senhora do Sardão. Believed to be the oldest church in Bragança, the original church was built in the 16th century in Romanesque style, but was restored in the 18th century. Its striking baroque carved portal is from this latter date. Inside there are three naves, but the most interesting feature is the painted barrel vault ceiling depicting the Assumption of the Virgin.
