Marco de Canaveses is situated approximately 20 km southeast of Penafiel and its controversial Santa Maria Church is considered a model of contemporary architecture. Built between 1994 and 1997, it was designed by one of Portugal’s foremost architects Álvaro Siza Vieira (b 1933). His many notable projects include the Faculty of Architecture building of Porto University and the Library of Aveiro University. The church is part of a planned urban square complex and Álvaro Siza worked in collaboration with architect Rolando Torgo. The appearance is simple and austere and is said to observe the principles of spatial purity and geometrical abstraction.
