After Afonso Henriques captured Óbidos in 1148, the parish church of Santa Maria was built on the site of a Moorish mosque. The 16th century present church has a distinctive white bell tower and a lovely Renaissance portal; inside, painted ceilings are matched with azulejo tiled walls. The paintings by Josefa de Óbidos (1634-1684) are a feature and in particular the retable depicting the ‘Mystic Marriage of St Catherine’. The tomb of Dom João de Noronha is regarded as a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. The ten year old future King Afonso V married his cousin Isabel here, when she was eight.
