Within the Sesimbra castle walls is the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, built originally in 1160, it is the oldest church in Sesimbra. It was substantially modified and rebuilt in 1721, as is evidenced by an inscription over the entrance. The small cemetery was added at this time. The walls inside are covered with 18th century blue and white tiles depicting scenes from Mary’s life. The 17th century gilt woodwork surrounding the altar is noteworthy, as is the rare 13th century alabaster image of Nossa Senhora dos Homens (Our Lady of Men) in the sacristy.
