Situated within the fortified walls of the castle, the Igreja de Santa Maria de Castelo was the original mother church of Palmela. It is thought to have been founded in the 12th century and was rebuilt in the Renaissance period, only to be totally destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Still to be seen today are the funeral chapel, vestiges of 17th century tiles, an entrance, legs of refectory tables and some parts of the Manueline vault. Sad fate for what was evidently once a beautiful church.
