There are many caves along the Serra da Arrábida coastline, but the Lapa de Santa Margarida is probably the best known and was described by Hans Christian Andersen in these terms: ‘It is a veritable church hewn out of the living rock, with a fantastic vault, organ pipes, columns, and altars’. Located about 500 metres west of the Portinho da Arrábida beach, it has two entrances, one from sea and the other from land. The earliest evidence of man’s presence in the region, in the Lower Palaeolithic age, was found here. Apart from the primitive church there are stalactites and stalagmites.
