The Santa Luzia Gardens have been created on the site of the old abandoned Hinton sugar and liquor factory. Its large chimney has, however, been preserved as a reminder of the factory’s important role in Madeira’s sugar industry. The gardens cover approximately four acres and are divided into five themed areas, Ampitheatre, (Anfiteatro), Tropical, Water (Água), Terraced (Socalcos) and Laurissilva. Other features are a waterfall, bridge, children’s playground, an esplanade cafe and the remains of an old sugar production machine.
