To the southeast of the old town of Elvas is the Santa Luzia fort, an excellent and well preserved example of 17th century Portuguese military engineering. Built in 1648, it is a typical star shaped fortress, this being the design hardest to attack. Being a border town, Elvas was constantly under assault and played an important part in the Peninsular War. The walled city, together with this fort and the Forte da Graça to the north, formed an impressive line of defence.
