Close to the River Nabão and the 15th century bridge, the Ponte Velha, is the 16th century Renaissance chapel of Santa Iria, the town’s patron saint. It is said she was a young nun, who in the 7th century was murdered on this site by two feuding suitors; one gave her a potion to make her appear pregnant and the other killed her in a fit of rage and threw her body in the river. Above the altar is a powerful stone retable of Christ on the Cross. The painted coffered ceiling and 17th century azulejos are also of interest.
