Just off the Praça da Republica is the peaceful and romantic Santa Cruz Park, designed originally for meditation. Also known as the Jardim da Sereia and the Mermaid’s garden, it was laid out during the reign of King João V. The twin towered entrance is crowned by three statues representing Faith, Charity and Hope, from which the Queen’s Steps lead to a fountain decorated with statues and further on a lake surrounded by sculpted boxwood. With tables provided, this is a great place for a picnic.
