The 13th century Santa Cruz Parish Church of Oliveira do Hospital was built on the orders of one of the founders of the town, Domingues Joanes, a knight of the Order of the Hospitallers. His large tomb is inside the church, surmounted by an impressive carved knight on horseback. Other features are the wooden painted ceilings and an exquisite 14th century altarpiece, depicting the Virgin Mary with St Joachim and St Anne. The courtyard boasts the largest lime tree in Portugal standing 25 metres high and 4 metres in diameter.
