Santa Cruz da Graciosa, the capital of the island, is a picturesque, whitewashed town framed by the blue of the sea. The town is best explored on foot as the sights are mostly located near the tree-laden central square Praça Fontes Pereira de Melo, known locally as the Rossio. In the square is the town hall with three forged-iron balconies. In the streets leading off the Rossio are many beautiful manor and town houses. Near the centre are two attractive ponds. The two churches dominating the town’s skyline are the Igreja da Misericórdia and the much bigger Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz.
