The Augustine monastery, founded on this site in 1131, was the most important monastic institution in Portugal and contains the tombs of the first two Portuguese Kings Dom Afonso Henriques and Dom Sancho I. Nothing now remains of the original Romanesque Monastery and the 16th century saw the church developed in the Manueline style by Diogo de Boytaca, Nicolau Chanterene and many others. There are many interesting aspects to this church, but do not miss the pulpit carved by João de Ruão, the choir stalls carved on the theme of the Portuguese Explorations and the two tiered cloisters.
