The Monastery of Santa Cruz was founded in the 16th century and was occupied by Lóios monks until the banning of religious orders in 1834. The azulejos of the large Santa Cruz church and the carved and gilded decoration to its side chapels make the visit more than worthwhile. Of particular interest are the azulejos to the chapel of the Holy Family, telling the story of Joseph’s dream and the Virgin Mary’s wedding. In the transept the beautiful tiled wall panels depict the lives of St Anthony of Lisbon and St Benedict of Nurcia.
