Built on the orders of Jerónimo Portilo, the founder of the Order of the Holy Cross, construction of the church took more than 100 years, having been started in 1625 and only completed in 1737. The resultant mixture of both Mannerist and Baroque architectural styles has produced a building of considerable merit, with an imposing façade. Internally, there is a high nave and a great deal of fine 18th century gilt carving, an interesting organ and the work to the pulpits is exceptional.
