Located some 43 km north of Arganil, the town of Santa Comba Dão is worth visiting. The 18th century Baroque Igreja Matriz has twin bell towers and the Misericórdia church dates from the mid 18th century and has a high altar carved by João da Fonseca in 1774 and painted and gilded by Arcângelo de Almeida in 1782. The Casa dos Arcos houses the public library; it was the home of the Horta e Costa family, Barons of Santa Comba. The Casa de António de Oliveira Salazar is the birthplace of the former dictator (1889-1970) who is buried in the town.
