Founded in 1496 by João Gonçalves da Câmara, a son of Madeira’s discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, the tombs of Madeira’s first three governors lie under the high altar of the present church. The most notable internal features are the walls and floors decorated with precious 17th century azulejo tiles and the wooden ceilings decorated with Hispano-Arabic tiles. You will also find a collection of restored 17th and 18th century paintings. Adjacent to the fine Gothic portal is a tower with a cupola roofed with 16th and 17th tiles.
