Dating from the early 15th century, the Santa Clara church and convent is regarded as one of the finest examples of Portuguese baroque art. It is particularly noted for its richly embellished interior and the quality of the wood carving. Subject to considerable modifications in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was in 1730 that the great artist Miguel Francisco da Silva was assigned to carry out the impressive work to the chancel and crossing. The portico is the only artistic feature of a charming, but fairly austere, external elevation.
