At the mouth of the Mondego River stands the triangular Santa Catarina Fort, briefly used as a base by the Duke of Wellington when he landed to recapture Portugal from Napoleon in 1808. Started in the late 16th and completed in the 17th century it once formed part of a trio of defences with the forts of Buarcos and Palheiros. Inside, there is a small chapel dedicated to St Catherine which, together with the fort, was classified a national monument in 1961.
