Surrounded by groves of almond and orange trees, Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo is a town typical of the Algarve rural area known as "Barrocal". Its 16th century church is Renaissance in style. The interior is made up of three naves and has columns with Ionic capitals. The main chapel has a painted vault. Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo Tile Makers Association and the Santa Catarina Farming Cooperative are both worth visiting, as is the olive oil press and seeing the distillation process of “medronho” firewater. The surrounding countryside is wonderful for walking, particularly alongside the Ribeira de Alportel.
