The picturesque village of Santa Barbara is found east of Pico Alto in the Vila do Porto region. With its lovely indigo blue houses spread over the surrounding green slopes, this is without doubt the prettiest village on the island of Santa Maria. The village is worth visiting for this reason alone, but it also has a most attractive 17th-century church which is an attraction in its own right. This is a place of great tranquillity and serenity, and the village also provides a good starting point fro some very pleasant walks to explore the beautiful surroundings.
