Santa Bárbara de Nexe is a village located a few kilometers from Loulé. Human settlement in the area of Santa Bárbara de Nexe goes back around 30,000 years to the Middle Paleolithic era. The area has been invaded, and subsequently inhabited, by the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs. The oldest known town in the area is the Roman settlement Sexto Numísio Eros from the second century AD, which is mentioned on a local gravestone. The oldest reference to the area appears in 1291 in a chart about the boundaries of Faro and Loulé. The town is still very traditional, making for a pleasant outing from Loulé.
