Close to the Cathedral and the Misericórdia church, the immaculate Italian Renaissance Santa Barbara Gardens date from the 17th century and are framed by the 14th century façade of the former Archbishop’s Palace. This is the oldest section of the building, which has other facades from the 16th and 18th centuries; fire destroyed the interior of the building in the 18th century and it now houses the important Municipal Library. The gardens get their name from the statue of Saint Barbara on the fountain in the centre.
