Santa Barbara de Padrões is approximately nine miles from Castro Verde, and has a history dating back to Roman times. Hundreds of Roman skylights dating from the 1st century AD were discovered nearby. The Church of Saint Barbara is full of historical and ancient references. It was built in the 16th century; however, its origins are much older, dating from the ruins of an ancient Arab mosque, over which it is said to have been constructed. The Igreja Matriz de Padrões has a simple whitewashed façade, a lateral bell-tower and a richly decorated interior.
