The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora das Salvas is a centre of devotion to the Virgin Mary. She is particularly worshiped by fishermen. The chapel was commissioned by Vasco da Gama, who was born in Sines. It was constructed in place of a primitive hermitage commemorating the salvation of the Princess Fatassa. The church was built in the 15th century, and was subject to substantial alterations in the 16th century. The Manueline doorway dates from this period, as do several stones with inscriptions. The church has been listed as a National Monument. Every year, on August 15, a religious festivity is held, including processions on land and at sea.
