Located approximately 35 km northeast of Arcos de Valdevez, the 19th century Senhora da Peneda Sanctuary attracts pilgrims from all over the region in the first week in September. Dominated by the huge Meadinhas rock, it is clearly influenced by Bom Jesus in Braga, with its 300 step monumental staircase and series of terraces lined with twenty small chapels, marking episodes in the life of Jesus. In the square at the bottom there is a statue of the Angel Gabriel on a column and at the top, a sculpture of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação.
