Situated in the remote area of Cape Espichel is an impressive church, flanked on both sides by pilgrims’ lodgings. The baroque style church by architect João Antunes dates from 1701. The interior of the church is noted for the ceiling fresco by Lourenço da Cunha, the throne and statue of Our Lady of the Cape at the main altar and the pilgrims’ offerings. A few metres away is the tiny domed 15th century Chapel of Memory, tiled in blue and white azulejo panels, depicting the legend that the Virgin appeared here to an elderly couple in 1410.
