The Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Brotas was an important religious complex in the 16th century. It was once an important place of pilgrimage, so much so that houses for visitors were built nearby. The church interior has 16th and 18th century azulejo panels. Devotion to Our Lady of Brotas dates back to the 16th century and spread throughout Portugal. The first church built by the Portuguese in India was dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Brotas and there is a diocese in Brazil with the same name.
