Freixo de Baixo is located approximately 7 km northwest of Amarante and is well worth visiting to see the well preserved Romanesque church of Salvador dating from 1210. Although the present building is from the 13th century, there is reference to the St Augustine monastery as early as 1120. Abandoned after the suppression of religious orders in 1834, restoration started just over a century later and took almost 20 years to complete. Notable features are the rectangular tower and walled courtyard, giving a defensive appearance. The capitals of the six small columns to the portal have carved religious and plant motifs.
