Salir’s white village houses are scattered on the hillside around the ruins of the castle. With narrow streets and an alluring mix of bright flowerpots and whitewashed walls, it is an oasis of peace and quiet. The church, although of little architectural interest, contains a small treasure: an illuminated papal bull on parchment dated 1550. It also houses carved and gilded 18th century retables and statues from the 17th and 18th centuries. Taipa, a mix of sand, rubble and clay used by the Moors to build fortifications, was being used to build houses in the region until only a few decades ago.
